Draft updated guidelines for stroke management (intravenous thrombolysis and head position)

The Stroke Foundation Guidelines Development Group has released draft guidelines for stroke management, with recommendations for acute medical and surgical management (intravenous thrombolysis and head position).

These guidelines will be submitted to the NHMRC for approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.

As part of the approval process, the Stroke Foundation sought submissions on the draft guidelines from 10 October 2025 to 21 November 2025.

The draft guidelines are available to view electronically on the MAGICapp platform:

• Intravenous thrombolysis (Chapter 3 Acute medical and surgical management) – In the weak 9 to 24-hour recommendation, the word "unless" was omitted.

• Head position (Chapter 3 Acute medical and surgical management) – New weak recommendation for zero degrees head positioning prior to thrombectomy based on the new ZODIAC trial.

Availability

The draft guidelines were made available to the public on Friday 10 October 2025, and all submissions were to be received by 5 pm, Friday 21 November 2025.
