Updates for ICH surgical management, CVT medication, sleep disorders and carer support

The latest updates to the Australian and New Zealand living stroke guidelines include a new recommendation for minimally invasive haematoma evaculation for lobar ICH and updated consensus-based recommendation adding possible hemicraniectomy following the SWITCH trial.

Additionally, there is a new weak recommendation for continuous positive airway pressure use in sleep-disordered breathing and new practice points on suspected sleep-disordered breathing, and on continuation of treatment for previously diagnosed sleep disorders.

Other updates include an updated recommendation to include direct oral anticoagulant treatment for patients with cerebral venous thrombosis following new published trials and an upgrade from consensus-based recommendation to evidence-based recommendation for psychological and social support for carers

These updates were approved by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) on 22 April 2025.

The Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management continue to follow a living evidence approach, where monthly searches for new research evidence feed into 6-monthly reviews and updates where appropriate. We suggest you regularly check our Living guidelines updates.
