Notice of public consultation – October 2024
Draft updated guidelines for stroke management (ICH surgical intervention, cerebral venous thrombosis, sleep disorders, and carer support)
PLEASE NOTE: Submissions have now closed
The Stroke Foundation Guidelines Development Group has released draft guidelines for stroke management, with recommendations for acute medical and surgical management (surgical interventions for intracerebral haemorrhage management), secondary prevention (cerebral venous thrombosis), managing complications (sleep disorders), and community participation and long-term care (carer support).
These guidelines will be submitted to the NHMRC for approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.
As part of the approval process, the Stroke Foundation was seeking submissions on the draft guidelines from 7 October to 20 November 2024.
The draft guidelines are available to view electronically on the MAGICapp platform:
- Intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) management: Surgical interventions (Chapter 3 Acute medical and surgical management) – new weak recommendation for lobar ICH, and excluded ICH from existing recommendation. Updated consensus-based recommendation to include hemicraniectomy.
- Cerebral venous thrombosis (Chapter 4 Secondary prevention) – recommendation updated to include direct oral anticoagulant treatment following new published trials.
- Sleep disorders (Chapter 6 Managing complications) – new weak recommendation for continuous positive airway pressure use in sleep-disordered breathing. New practice points on suspected sleep-disordered breathing, and on continuation of treatment for previously diagnosed sleep disorders.
- Carer support (Chapter 8 Community participation and long-term care) – weak recommendation for psychological and social support for carers, replaces previous consensus recommendation.
For additional information see Living guidelines updates.
Availability
The draft guidelines were made available to the public on Monday 7 October 2024, and all submissions were to be received by 5 pm, Wednesday 20 November 2024.
