Rehabilitation options

Here are rehabilitation options for a patient who is:

  • Able to Sit to Stand without assistance; and
  • Able to Sit to Stand up from 45cm chair

In the bedroom

Sit to Stand independently​

Aim:​

  • Improve weight-bearing on affected leg during Sit to Stand.​

Set-up:​

  • Intact foot on block to increase weight-bearing on affected leg. ​
  • Arms crossed to reduce use of arms during Sit to Stand.​
  • Wall on affected side, bed rails on intact side to increase safety. ​

 

"Move your shoulders forward quickly and stand up, push through your right leg"

Mr D can sit to stand independently with decreased weightbearing on his right leg. He has some weakness and loss of co-ordination of all right leg muscles.​

 

Variations

  • Non-slip mat under affected foot if it is moving.​
  • Cue to the front or side of right knee to decrease hip adduction (e.g block or stool).​

 

Changing the level of difficulty

Decrease difficulty:

  • Increase height of chair.​
  • Increase base of Support.​
  • Place hands on knees. ​

 

Increase difficulty:

  • Decrease height of chair.​
  • Decrease base of Support.​
  • Add a dual task.​
  • Use chair with a soft surface. ​

 

In the therapy area
