COM-B Assessment

The COM-B Model

Capability. Opportunity. Motivation.

It is important to understand what specific barriers the survivor of stroke may face as they work towards being more active. This will be very different for each individual.

  • Download the COM-B assessment and use these questions as they are presented, or change them slightly to suit the situation more specifically. This assessment is based on the ‘COM-B Self-Evaluation Questionnaire’ (Keyworth 2020).

Motivational interviewing has been shown to be more effective than ‘advice-giving’ in terms of promoting change. The aim of using this approach is to enhance your clients’ self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation by exploring and resolving ambivalence and barriers to behaviour change.

Once you have determined the potential barriers, in terms of capability, opportunity and motivation, you can use the behaviour change strategies to help your clients start and sustain exercise/physical activity programs.
