Although the modification of lifestyle factors is recognised as extremely important for the management of secondary risk in stroke, the National Stroke Audit of Acute Services reported only 78% of patients with stroke received risk-factor-modification advice.
Behaviour-changing strategies targeting cardiovascular risk factors to prevent recurrence of stroke – including diet, physical activity, obesity, smoking and alcohol – are often derived from primary prevention, and aimed at the general population including people with stroke.
