Carotid surgery

Narrowing of the carotid arteries, known as stenosis, is commonly associated with stroke and TIA.

There is well-established evidence that the management of choice for symptomatic carotid stenosis is carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to remove built-up plaque.

Angioplasty and stenting are also used to widen the narrowed arteries.

For current research and evidence-based recommendations see our Clinical Guidelines.
