Learning objectives


After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • identify the pathologies behind the different causes of stroke
  • explain how risk factors for atherothrombosis contribute to the development of a stroke
  • describe the main mechanisms that can lead to vessel occlusion
  • state the main mechanisms by which atherosclerotic plaques rupture
  • the pathways that are involved in the most effective treatments.
  • identify the locations where emboli originate
  • distinguish the different cardiac causes of emboli and what these comprise
  • discriminate between types of intracranial haemorrhage, and how each has its own unique risk factors and management strategies.
