National Stroke Services Frameworks

The Acute and Rehabilitation Stroke Services Frameworks outline the principles, essential elements, models of care and staffing recommendations for stroke services. They guide where stroke services should be developed, and the monitoring of quality of stroke care.

The Frameworks complement clinical advice in the Clinical Guidelines for Stroke Management, and the organisational survey in the National Stroke Audit reports against elements in the Frameworks.

The Stroke Foundation first developed the Acute Stroke Services Framework in 2008 and the Rehabilitation Stroke Services Framework in 2013. The Acute Framework was revised in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, while the Rehabilitation Framework was revised in 2022.
