Deep venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg, arm or abdomen. If the clot detaches it can lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE), in which the pulmonary artery to the lungs is blocked. It is a significant risk in the first few weeks after stroke, with PE being the third most common cause of death.
